Overview discursive essays

Overview: a discursive essay is a type of essay that discusses a particular controversial topic or problem .

Types: there are three main types of discursive essays:
  1. For and against essay
    A for and against essay is a type of discursive essay that contains the supporting as well as opposing viewpoints of a chosen subject (that is for and against a particular issue). It must also clearly state the examples or reasons to justify the supporting and opposing points. This type of essay can appear in both the IELTS and TOEFL iBT writing task 2.   2. Opinionated essay
    An opinion essay is a type of discursive essay that contains the writer's personal point of view on a chosen subject. It must also clearly state the examples or reasons to justify the writer's own opinion. This type of essay can appear in both the IELTS and TOEFL iBT writing task 2. Click here for more details.

  3. Problem/solution essay
    A problem/solution essay is a type of discursive essay that presents the problem(s) and suggests possible measures that could be taken to reduce or solve the impact of the problem. It can also clearly state the writer's own opinion. This type of essay rarely appear in the TOEFL iBT writing task 2. Click here for more details.
