How to add a website/blog to Google Webmaster Tools

Google Webmaster Tools (GWT) is a set of free and easy tools helping website owners access their website data such as:
  • Which pages are added to Google’s Index
  • What search queries used to find the websites
  • Any website errors detected by Google
  • Which other sites added links to our websites
Here are simple steps to add a site or blog to Google Webmaster Tools account.

Step 1: Login using Google Account
Login to your Google Webmaster Tools using your Google Account (click here to go to the Google Webmaster page).

Step 2: Enter the URL of your site

Register the site that you would need Google control over by entering the URL of your site as prompted. Click Continue button.

Step 3: Verification
In this step, you need to verify your ownership of a site. This can be done by uploading a blank HTML file, or paste a <META> tag in the <head> tag section of your website/blog html. In my case, I add the tag generated by Google Webmaster Tools to my Blogger blog home page's <head> tag.

<meta content=' Unique code here ' name='google-site-verification'/>

Step 4: Access your website's data
After your website has been verified, click on your website link under the Sites tab.
You will then be directed to the “Dashboard” screen. This screen contains high level details of the most important information on your site such as :
  • Messages: sent by Google to alert if your web site may have any security holes
  • Site configuration: contains information about your Sitemaps, crawler access, etc...
  • Your site on the web: contains statistics information about how your site appears in Google's search results.
  • +1 Metrics: contains information about how the +1 button affects the traffic of your site.
  • Diagnostics: to tell about any errors that Google has encountered while crawling your site.
  • Labs: contains experimental new features in Google Webmaster Tools.
